Liver’s Health

“Liver’s Health” with Silybum marianum & Desmodium ascendens

 milk thistle

  • Description:
    • Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) is originally a plant native of the region of Southern Europe up to Asia, but today it is found throughout the world. It grows in rocky soils to a height of three to ten feet with an erect stem that bears large, alternating, prickly-edged leaves. The medicinal parts are the ripe seeds.
    • Desmodium ascendens is an herbaceous, perennial plant which grows up the trunks of trees in the Amazon rainforest of Peru / South America and on the West Coast of Africa. For therapeutic use one uses its leaves and small twigs.

  • Potential virtues:
    • Silybum marianum  has been used for centuries as herbal medicine for all kinds of liver diseases. It contains silymarin, which is composed of flavanolignans such as silybin, silydianin, and silychristine. Its seeds contain betaine, trimethylglycine and essential fatty acids, which may contribute to silymarin’s hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. The plant is used to treat dyspepsia, liver toxicity, hepatitis as well as liver cirrhosis. It helps to improve the skin, to protect the nervous system and to combat bronchial spasms.
    • Desmodium ascendens has been traditionally used to treat asthma, bronchitis, jaundice, hepatitis, muscle cramps and backache. It is rich in flavonoids, alkaloids, isoquinoline, beta-phenylethylamines as well as triterpenes. Desmodium is used to protect the liver and combat liver infections, alleviate side effects of hepatotoxic treatments and treat allergies like asthma, urticaria and hay fever.

  • I typically prescribe “Liver’s Health” to support liver cleansing and to regenerate it after poisoning, in particular alcoholic poisoning. It helps to
    • To expel gallbladder stones and fluidify the bile
    • To support detox and other cleansing programs
    • To prevent and alleviate liver disorders and intoxication (e.g. Alcoholic Liver Disease and Cirrhosis)
    • To regenerate liver cell in all types of hepatitis

  • Recommended basic treatment
    • Take 2 capsules 3 times a day with a large glass of water before meals (morning, midday, evening)
    • Please note that in some very rare cases the consumption of milk thistle could cause mild gastrointestinal disorders. In theory, silymarin (contained in milk thistle) could accelerate the elimination of oestrogen, which could possible interfere oral contraceptives or replacement oestrogens. Moreover, milk thistle could act on the liver metabolism of certain drugs.
