Herbs are traditionally used to strengthen the body and to treat diseases. However, the effects of herbs may take some time to materialize. Thus, it is important to maintain a regular intake of herbal food supplements over the defined period of treatment. Even if their benefits may appear to be more subtle, one should keep in mind that food supplements treat the basic disequilibria within the body and regenerate health and do not limit their action on the symptoms of a particular ill-being.
Same as for synthetic drugs, herbs may trigger side effects and can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care and under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. A practitioner will help you with a tailor-made cure according to your individual needs taking into account your personal condition and life style. Auto-medication should in general be avoided. Especially children, pregnant or breastfeeding women as well as patients with allergies, chronic diseases or severe illness should categorically consult their practitioner before taking food supplements. For each food supplement you will find a short overview of the most important contraindications and interactions with other drugs or food supplements. In case of doubt, please consult your practitioner.
All food supplements do not equal. It is important to take high quality food supplements. It goes without saying; the quality of food supplements depends on its basic component – the plant, its cultivation and processing. The plants’ active components are in most cases very fragile and should be stored at a dry place protected from shifts in temperature or high temperature. I recommend keeping them in the fridge. Moreover, the quality of food supplements depends on the capsule’s characteristics: To maximise the food supplements action and virtues, it should act directly within the gut. High quality capsules are resistant to the stomach’s acids that would otherwise largely neutralize food supplements particular benefits. I do have a list of preferred laboratories with whom I work for the proven quality of their food supplements and will be happy to provide you with contact information if need may be.
It shall be reminded that food supplements cannot replace a varied diet; a professional practitioner can help you analysing your diet and correcting it if necessary according to your needs and taste. In some cases, it is preferably to conduct a cleansing program before taking food supplements in order to maximize its absorption by the body and thus its benefits. A health care professional can suitably assess your state of health on this matter.
In the following section, I am going to present my most preferred food supplements based on more than 20 years of experiences. Nowadays, description of medicinal use of food supplements and herbs have gained more interest and are normally well documented. For all food supplements further reading is available on request.
